Marine Insurance Companies often ask for an insurance survey before they will insure a boat. They need a fair valuation, a description of the boat's structural condition and an accurate list of the equipment. The items most likely to be the subject of a claim need special attention, for example the through hull fittings, the rudder and steering and the mast and rigging on a yacht. The surveyor's valuation takes into account the boat's condition and the replacement cost of the boat at the time of the survey.
If your boat is damaged by collision, lightening, theft or fire your boat insurance company will need to see a damage survey report. This gives them an independent assessment of the extent of the damage and recommends what action is needed to put things right. The preparation of a repair schedule and the monitoring of the repair and replacement work can be carried out. I have many years experience in damage survey work and carry out surveys on behalf of several UK based boat insurance companies.
